East Centre is 60
On the same day that Robert Menzies was elected as prime minister of Australia East Centre was born. The date was 10th December
the year 1949. Sixty years on from the forming East Centre is going from strength to strength.
I thought it would be nice to take a trip down memory lane and see how things have changed over the years from the style of cars and caravans of yesterday, to the people and events that have changed the world during this time. Although many things have changed and men have now been to the Moon and back, some things have a habit of repeating themselves as you will see if you read on
In 1950 the labour party led by Clement Atlee won the general election ousting Winston Churchill’s Conservative party.
Will it be Labour or Conservative who win the General Election this year?
The eastern part of
U.S. had a snow storm, which had 1 million people without power. Still have the snowstorms and the power cuts but in Scotland this year.
The World Cup took place in 1950 too, on July 16 –
Uruguay beat
Brazil 2–1 to win the World Cup.
In this celebration year there will again be a World Cup this time held in South Africa – Who will win only time will tell.
The first ever Formula One World Championship was awarded in1950 to Italian Nino Farina, with the first world championship race being
held at Silverstone.
This year the 2010 British Grand Prix will be held back at Silverstone. It was meant to go to Donnington Park back unfortunately they couldn't come up with the funds to do the improvements required.
Our current F1 World Champion is British can we repeat it again this year?
At Wimbledon that year, Budge Patty of the
US defeated Frank Sedgman of
Australia 6-1 8-10 6-2 6-3. the women’s championship was won by Louise Borough Clap of the US defeated Margaret Osborne du Pont 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 so nothing much changed there we still don’t have a British Champion.
Will 2010 be the year that we have a British even Scottish winner of the men’s single’s let’s hope so?
Caravans have changed a bit over the years going from the likes of those below to the one’s we are more familiar with today. There were no Fridges, Toilets, Showers or central heating in those days, and you couldn’t have taken your TV’s or Solar panel’s. Gas lighting would be the equivalent of today’s LED lights.
1950's 2 berth

and the Family version

The cars used for towing have changed a bit too -
No 4 x 4’s available unless you used a land rover of course but then they have changed a lot too over the years.
This was the sporty version!

A few of the centre members are celebrating their big day this year also so I thought it would be nice to look and see what happened around the time of their births. The music the famous people and the events. So far I know of 4 members celebrating their 60th’s if there are any others out there please let me know so that I can give you a mention.

Celebration Weekend
East Centre is 60 this year and as part of the Jubilee weekend celebrations we have been offered exclusive free access to Prestongrange Museum.
Although the Museum is not open to the public at this time of year they have offered to open for us on the afternoon of Sunday the 14th March
between 2 & 4. The Museum would like to have an idea of the numbers of people that can be expected to attend. If you are attending the Rally and
would like to take advantage of this fabulous offer can you please drop me an e-mail liz@scceastcentre.co.uk giving numbers before the 1st of March so
that we can let the appropriate people know. See below for Museum details, We all look forward to seeing you there.
Prestongrange is a site of major importance in the story of Scotland's Industrial Revolution. It was the location of a sixteenth century harbour, a seventeenth century glass works, eighteenth and nineteenth century potteries and a nineteenth/twentieth century coal mine and brick works. Remnants of these former industries can still be seen, and many of the structures are still intact including the rare Hoffman Kiln built in 1937 and the Cornish Beam Engine, unique in Scotland as it the only beam engine still on the site where it worked.
The museum site is open to the public all day, throughout the year.
We are now closed for the winter season and will re-open on 1st April 2010.
